GSK

Teaching over 90,000 employees how to write right.

GSK plc, formerly GlaxoSmithKline plc, is a British multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company headquartered in London, England. GSK is the tenth largest pharmaceutical company in the world and #294 on the 2022 Fortune Global 500.

In 2012 – under prosecution by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) and combined investigations of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS-OIG), FSA and FBI – GSK pleaded guilty to promotion of drugs for unapproved uses, failure to report safety data and kickbacks to physicians in the United States and agreed to pay a US$3 billion (£1.9bn) settlement. It was the largest health-care fraud case to date in the US and the largest settlement by a drug company.

A condition of the settlement was that GSK ad to enhance its culture of compliance and ethics.

Write Right

As a consultant to k-nekt Communications, and working with the Chief Legal Counsel and leaders in Compliance, our team developed Write Right, an employee facing training program activated within GSK’s Learning Management System (LMS).

Write Right empowered employees to draft compliant internal and external communications through an instructional design and training that leveraged tested writing strategies and actions.

The Program at a Glance

Our team established a road map and strategic marketing beachhead to launch the program in order to maximize its efficacy and an efficient roll-out. The plan involved educating and training 5 key members from the legal function and empowering them to train an additional 30 attorneys to deliver training to over 300 attorneys who would then deliver training to viper 90,000 employees across the enterprise.

Linking Values to Actions

Our team developed a unique brand identity (in over 12 languages) to help differentiate the Write Right brand, assets and training amongst a sea of mandatory, required and recommended training programs. This approach helped Write Right quickly embed itself into the companies culture of compliance, thereby compelling employees to engage and complete training in a timely and expeditious manner.

Write Right TED Talks

To instill trust and familiarity with employees around the world, our team developed a series of Write Right TED Talks. These TED Talks put highly recognizable and respected GSK employees and leaders front and center to share compliance stories and experiences throughout their career with the company.

Call Center Posters

With a majority of GSK’s 90,000+ employees working in large call centers around the world, our team developed methods to reinforce and imprint key learning messages from the program. Large scale posters leveraged branded communications, as well as positive statements from conversations we had with CEO Sir Andre Witty.

Leaders and Learners Guides

To help ensure face-to-face training reinforce critical learnings, our team developed an entire instructional design curriculum for both leaders and learners.

Visual Aids

Employees in the UK “hot-seapped” cubicles and offices, so our team developed transportable visual cue cards for managers and employees to “take learning with them,” wherever they worked.

Write Right Training

Online training mirrored the face-to-face training which was happening across the organization, and helped too quickly imprint key learnings with employees.
